Community Programme
Chinese dance plays a significant part in the arts scene in Singapore. Singapore Chinese Dance Theatre (SCDT) aims to bring Chinese dance out of the theatre and into the community, so more people can get to experience and witness the beauty of this traditional art form. Each year, SCDT organise two flagship community outreach programme, namely Under the BIG Tree and Chinese Dance Fiesta.
UNDER THE BIG TREE
Under The BIG Tree (UTBT) is an outdoor dance carnival that aims to attract new audiences, especially families with young children, by putting up family-friendly performances under a century-old tree, complete with Chinese dance-related fringe activities and “roadside” snacks. Over the last five years, the event has expanded in scale and witnessed a steady growth in attendance. SCDT was honoured to have invited the distinguished Guest of Honour, former president of Singapore, Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam, in 2017, former president of Singapore, Madam Halimah Yacob in 2018, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong in 2019 and Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat in 2023.
CHINESE DANCE FIESTA
Chinese Dance Fiesta (CDF), a nationwide outreach programme, which aims to bring the Chinese dance communities together.
The Chinese Dance Fiesta (CDF) is a nationwide outreach programme that aims to celebrate Chinese dance as a communities, Launched in 2015 and co-organized with the National Arts Council (NAC), CDF goes beyond performances by offering masterclasses and talk-and-demonstration sessions to deepen public appreciation for Chinese dance.
Each year, CDF features an average of 150 performers from various schools and dance companies, engaging over 5,000 audience members. With the goal of making Chinese dance accessible to diverse communities, Singapore Chinese Dance Theatre (SCDT) collaborates with a growing list of partners to bring performances to locations where people live, work and play across Singapore.
